How To Change The World

'Want to know how to change the world? I have an idea on what it might take.

Last year Debbie and I celebrated our thirty-fourth wedding anniversary, and the day turned out to be a microcosm of the entire span. What happened then was exactly what had let us survive so many years together. (We're now past 35!)

That Friday we headed down to Grand Central station to catch the Metro North to a little B&B where Debbie'd made reservations. I'd gotten quite comfortable (dozed off) when the conductor tapped my shoulder and told me we'd missed our stop. Well, we had to go all the way up to Poughkeepsie and take the next train back to get to Cold Spring, a hot meal, and a warm bed.

And that, folks, is how we managed to last so long. It's also the secret to how one changes the world.

Did you miss it? Let me spell it out for you. We made the distance because we didn't know when we should have stopped! All those times when any reasonable individual would have seen the futility of the effort and thrown in the towel, we kept going because we didn't have a clue that we should have given up. As a consequence, I'm in one of the most exciting cities in the world with my best friend in the world (and yes, we're still friends with benefits.)

'Want to change the world? Just start. Then, when others around you start to realize that there's no way it can be done, stay as clueless as possible. You see, changing the world is a journey, not a destination. If you simply keep going, who knows how far you can go? I certainly don't, but then, we've already established that I definitely don't know when to stop. (Fortunately, neither does Debbie.)

'Peace.
